Everything you need to know about Portuguese gold

In France, the gold used in jewelry is 9 or 18 carats. Further south, in Portugal, necklaces, earrings (or brincos), the famous coracao de viana and even bracelets are made of 19.2 carat gold. This alloy makes it possible to produce more resistant products and to obtain different shades.

19.2 carat gold essentially takes three colors:

• Gray – white: gold is then associated with palladium, up to 20%;
• Red: the jewel contains 80% solid gold, 17% copper and 3% silver;
• Yellow: the composition is 7% copper, 13% silver and 80% pure gold.

Every day, the London Bullion Market Association sets the spot price of an ounce of gold. Currently the price is around 1,800 eur. So, on this basis it is possible to determine the price of Portuguese gold. It is then enough to calculate:

Gold price x 80%

Thus, in a piece of yellow Portuguese gold jewelry, containing 80% gold, the calculation is: 1,800 x 80% = 1,440 eur per gram.

In France, a discount of 6.25% is required to obtain the price per gram of an 18-carat jewel.

We therefore find:

• 24 carat gold: deer head, and 999;
• 22 carat gold: deer head, and 916;
• 19, 2 carat gold: deer head, and 800;
