Is it possible to change lead into gold ?

The search for a way to transform lead into gold finds a real scientific basis. In the 1920s, scientists developed a particle accelerator. It was by studying atoms and their reaction to a bombardment of particles that experts determined that the structure of nuclei could change. Far from the idea of ​​transforming lead or zinc into gold or silver, but it was simply a question of understanding the interaction of the elements between them.

As for gold and lead, these metals have chemical similarities. Lead is made up of a nucleus of 126 neutrons and 82 protons. These neutrons and protons number 118 and 79 for gold. There is therefore very little difference between the lead atom and the gold atom. However, even if the gap is small, the transmutation is difficult, because neutrons and protons must be removed from the gold. 

The modern era has seen the emergence of new technologies and a more in-depth knowledge of the atom, but also of neutrons and protons. This is why science now uses chemistry, nuclear power and particle accelerators for medical, civil and military purposes.

Little by little, the idea of ​​transforming lead into gold faded. Indeed, several studies and solutions have been found with varying degrees of success. However, none have been implemented. The cause ? The cost. Chemical agglomeration has a high cost for a low final yield, both in material and financial terms. The most viable technique would nevertheless be the particle accelerator, which, launched at full speed for an extremely long time, could lead to the detachment of certain protons and neutrons from the lead nucleus. This reduction would then lead to the artificial creation of gold.

However, the transmutation of metals does exist. We thus find various processes in the creation of diamonds, water and even gold, notably based on mercury. But once again, the usefulness, complexity, and cost slow down these unprofitable operations. 

Legends allow us to dream and explain the inexplicable. However, the attraction of gold and its value has not diminished over time, in fact the opposite. From the creation of Edmond de Rothschild's gold reserves, to gold investments, states, banks and individuals keep gold coins and bars en masse.
