Is it possible to turn lead into gold?

The search for a way to transform lead into gold has a real scientific basis. In the 1920s, scientists developed a particle accelerator. By studying atoms and their reaction to particle bombardment, experts determined that the structure of nuclei could change. This was far from the idea of ​​transforming lead or zinc into gold or silver; it was simply a matter of understanding the interaction of the elements with each other.

As for gold and lead, these metals share chemical similarities. Lead consists of a nucleus of 126 neutrons and 82 protons. These neutrons and protons are 118 and 79 for gold. Therefore, there is very little difference between the lead atom and the gold atom. However, even if the difference is small, transmutation is difficult because neutrons and protons must be removed from the gold.

This reduction in weight would then lead to the artificial creation of gold.

However, the transmutation of metals does indeed exist. Various processes are used to create diamonds, water, and even gold, particularly those based on mercury. But once again, utility, complexity, and cost hamper these unprofitable operations.

Legends allow us to dream and explain the inexplicable. However, the appeal of gold and its value has not diminished over time; quite the opposite.
