La Monnaie de Paris, an institution that makes history

Located on the left bank of Paris, La casa de Papel, La Monnaie de Paris, has for centuries been manufacturing the coins that pass through our wallets and the medals that delight collectors.

1150 years of History

In 1775, the headquarters of the Paris Mint was inaugurated on Quai de Conti in the 6th arrondissement of Paris.
Louis XV decided on the construction of the building then in 1796, the Paris Mint was attached to the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry. Several manufacturing workshops were manufactured in France until 1878, where only the Monnaie de Paris remained active.

From hammer to laser: manufacturing parts

Since 1973, parts have been manufactured in Pessac in Gironde. The Parisian site having become too narrow, it was therefore decided to relocate the workshops.
Originally struck with the strength of the arm and hand, metal pieces were struck with a hammer.
Certain techniques from the time have been preserved, and are now combined with innovative industrial processes such as laser and 3D technologies.

And it hits hard in Pessac! The press speed is 850 coins struck per minute.
Each year, the Paris Mint produces 1 billion coins, including 700 million euro coins. The rest represents gold coins, medals and foreign currencies.
The expertise of Monnaie de Paris has been recognized by the award of the Living Heritage Company label. A total of 40 other countries trust France to mint their currency.

From Jacques Chirac to the Smurfs: timeless collections

There are common coins to buy your wand and those that serve as souvenirs or become part of a collection. You have probably already bought a souvenir medal at the shop of a museum or tourist site that you liked; your uncle takes great pleasure in showing you his collection of 500 coins struck in limited editions
that’s also what La Monnaie de Paris is all about.

From Ancient Rome to the Middle Ages via modern times, its collections have spanned the centuries. Each theme celebrates great moments in history, historical figures or even exceptional heritage of the world. From Mount Fuji to Lafayette, via Jacques Chirac or the Franco-German alliance, the Paris Mint makes history. Also the most popular: alongside the coins celebrating peace, there is that of Johnny Halliday and more recently those of Greedy Smurf and Lazy Smurf.
