The history of Chinese gold bars

Traditional Chinese gold ingots are called Yunbao (meaning “original treasure”) or Sycee (meaning “fine silk”). Manufacturing is carried out by local and independent workshops, outside of any Hôtel de la Monnaie. Unlike current ingots, ancient ingots could take different shapes (oval, boats, or even turtles, depending on the mold used). As for the value, it was determined by the weight of the ingot, expressed in “taels”. This unit of measurement is equal to approximately 40 grams, a little more than the ounce of gold (1,800 eur for the ounce, or 12,600 Yuan).

Traditional ingots were used in commerce as currency from the Qin dynasty until the third century BCE.

Traditional Chinese ingots, or yuan bao, retained their financial and market value until the Qing dynasty. Nowadays, traditional Chinese ingots are aimed at collectors. Indeed, their diverse and varied forms represent the first testimonies of ancestral know-how, and of the history of China.

Today, the meaning has evolved, and the ingots called Yunbao refer to gold creations, while those referred to as Sycee refer to silver ingots.

Chinese tradition is that people give each other traditional ingots (or bar), or yuan bao (also called “Fortune ingots”) at the New Year, to wish prosperity, happiness and wealth .
