Everything you need to know about 925 sterling silver
WHAT IS STERLING SILVER ?
Sterling silver, or 925 silver, is an alloy of pure silver with other metals (usually copper). The denomination 925 refers to the quantity of silver contained in the assembly (92.5%). As for the name sterling, it refers to English coins, which were minted for many years on silver.
The price of sterling silver depends on the price of silver, set every day in London by the London Bullion Market Association. The spot price is determined based on several factors, including demand and supply. This is why knowing the purity of the jewelry is essential, in order to be able to determine an exact price.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF STERLING SILVER ?
Pure silver, like gold, is very malleable, and does not allow the creation of jewelry. So, other metals are added to make the silver harder. This alloy can be worked in various forms (rings, coins, earrings).
In addition to making manufacturing easier, 925 silver is resistant, which gives it better durability over time.
People with sensitive skin, on the other hand, can wear all kinds of Sterling silver jewelry. Indeed, 925 silver has hypoallergenic properties.
Moreover, the color of silver goes well with many precious or semi-precious stones. Amethyst, diamond or sapphire, it’s up to you!
HOW CAN WE RECOGNIZE STERLING SILVER ?
The importation and use of precious metals are controlled by the various administrative authorities. In France, gold and silver are subject to hallmarking. We then affix a mark, which certifies the purity of the jewel. We can also find the name or logo of the founder on the silver bars.
The hallmark is a guarantee for people who buy a ring or an ingot, certifying that the product sold is actually made of silver. The legal marks for sterling silver are:
- The head of Minerva;
- The number “925”.
Before any purchase of silver, check the presence of these two inscriptions on the object.
The color can also tell you about the composition and the alloy used. Silver is opaque, while plated jewelry tends to shine.
Finally, the magnet technique can give you information if there is no punch. Necklaces and other silver products are not attracted to magnets.
Note: sterling silver should not be confused with rhodium, which protects a piece of jewelry during rhodium plating and also takes on a gray color.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STERLING SILVER AND PURE SILVER ?
Sterling silver and solid silver are both made from the same precious metal. However, the composition and destination of the two types of money differ.
Solid silver is exclusively reserved for the manufacture of ingots, because these products require very high purity. Pure silver is therefore used in investments, without treatment or alloy. If you want to purchase solid silver bars , check the brands and hallmarks, which guarantee the traceability and purity of the product.
Conversely, sterling silver is mixed with copper to increase hardness. Any jewelry that does not contain a minimum of 92.5% silver cannot be considered to be made of sterling silver.

If you notice scratches or marks that do not disappear after several cleanings, then you should call a professional.
